Jumuʿah.

Jumuʿah — Friday prayer

The weekly gathering.

Jumuʿah is the Friday congregational prayer. It replaces Dhuhr for those obligated to attend.

  • It consists of two rakʿahs preceded by two short khuṭbahs (sermons). The total takes less time than Dhuhr.
  • Obligatory on adult, sane Muslim men who are resident (not travelling) and able to attend. Recommended — not obligatory — for women, children, the ill, and travellers.
  • Recommended preparation: ghusl (full bath), wearing clean clothes, applying scent, going early, and reading Surah Al-Kahf.
  • If you miss the congregational prayer entirely, you pray Dhuhr (4 rakʿahs) instead — no blame.
